History of Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh derives its name from the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort which is believed to have been gifted by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana. The fort is more than 2000 years old and is surrounded by dense forests.

The area was once the hunting ground of the Maharajas of Rewa. In 1968, it was declared a National Park and later became Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger.

The park is also accessible by road via regular buses and private taxis from cities like Jabalpur, Katni, and Khajuraho. The most comfortable and popular option is to fly to Jabalpur and then hire a taxi for a scenic 4-5 hour drive directly to the park gates.

The nearest airports are Jabalpur (200 km) and Khajuraho (250 km). From there, you can hire a taxi for a 4-5 hour drive to the park.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Umaria (35 km) on the Katni-Bilaspur section. Jabalpur (200 km) is a major, well-connected station with more frequent trains. Taxis are readily available from both stations.

By Road

Bandhavgarh is well-connected by road to major cities in Madhya Pradesh. Regular buses and private taxis are available from Jabalpur, Khajuraho, and Katni. The drive is scenic but can be long.
